Max McGonigal - Services

Freelance Editor:

Working on either Avid (Adrenaline HD, Media Composer, Express Pro) or Final Cut Pro v.5.0, Max is able to off-line and on-line your production as needed.

He has solid experience of editing short form and long form on SD, and can also do a fine job of grading too! Max is very eager to edit on a High Definition project.

Producer / Director:

Finding someone with the ability and common sense to see a project through from start to finish isn’t always easy, but Max has the canny ability of making it happen.

He is excellent at producing and directing short features, especially those that are science based with a strong emphasis on expert contributors.

He’s a ‘people finder’ and quickly establishes a good rapport. He can think on his feet and direct an interview, even at short notice, asking the questions that the viewer wants to hear the answers to.

He is most comfortable directing small crews with one or two cameras, soundman, and AP. Alternatively; many smaller budget productions require Self Shooting PD’s, to take care of several stories simultaneously. This increases production output over a shorter amount of time, and Max has had experience of working autonomously in this role, using DV and Beta SP camera’s.

Producer / Editor:

Getting a project handed to you with little or no brief can be challenging to say the least! But Max has faced this situation time and again.

Rule number one, get stuck in! Max views the media whilst keeping in mind the overriding editorial requirement, measured against any Ofcom compliance issues that might pose a problem. Then, quickly and effectively he gets to work, whether organising any additional footage, shoots, or just the nitty-gritty of off-lining and scripting.

Max will then see the project through to conclusion, by on-lining and organising audio session, directing voice over and final mix. Max takes personal pride in the overall look of any piece, and has real flair at commissioning and working on title sequences, and graphic style templates.

Evaluation

Max has proven expertise in the area of evaluation:

To evaluate acquired factual programming supplied by production companies, distributors, or broadcasters. He is able to supply an independent and in-depth report based on your editorial requirements.

Max will then make his recommendations based on the programme’s potential.

The report will give: a brief synopsis of the content, evaluation of editorial, execution of production, quality of media, any Ofcom compliance issues and its audience suitability, including watershed.

In conclusion Max will make recommendations regarding any further post production. On average, he will write a 400 - 500 word report on each programme hour, unless a single report is required for an entire series.

Daily / Weekly rates upon request.

Compliance / Versioning:

Max has a great deal of knowledge and experience in the field of compliance versioning. There is no fixed rule, but generally speaking it takes between 2 and 5 days to version a one hour programme depending on what is editorially required both in editing and re-scripting.

The simplest versioning is editing for new part breaks. More complex work requires significant editing to make Ofcom compliant, creating a new pre-title tease, occasionally a new title sequence, new graphic/caption style, script editing or re-writing, and a new voice over.

Max will be able to give you accurate advice on any compliance versioning issues you have.
